About the adrenals.
The adrenals glands sit on top of the kidneys. The outer part of the adrenals is responsible for the production of cortisone, cortisol, aldosterone, and androstenedione and dehydroepiandrosterone otherwise known as (DHEA). The central part of the adrenals secretes adrenaline that’s also called epinephrine and norepinephrine.
Adrenaline, cortisone and norepinephrine are the stress hormones. Cortisone helps you to metabolise carbohydrates, as well as helping to regulate blood sugars and balance salt and water in the body, but this is only a small part of what the adrenals are responsible for.
When we are under stress the body triggers what is known as the fight or flight response because, it can’t tell the difference between and actual threat and an imagined threat. A message is then sent to the hypothalamus, the hypothalamus then signals the adrenal glands to release adrenaline and cortisol into the bloodstream, but this also floods the body with cytokines to help prepare the body for a possible injury, but injury rarely happens, because usually we’ve entered this state due to stress and psychological factors and not an actually physical threat and so inflammation occurs in the body as a direct result of these hormones being released that are not needed.
when we are under constant stress the adrenals are put under more and more pressure and so they can become depleted of the essential hormones and health problems can occur with the following symptoms
· low blood pressure
· Memory loss
· Difficulty sleeping
· Moody behavior
· Cravings for salt
There are steps that you can take to help minimise adrenal fatigue, such as learning to relax, meditation and eating the correct foods will play a significant role.
if we eat too much sugar then the adrenals will believe that we are in danger, because the pancreas will release insulin to remove this excess sugar that we have consumed, but in doing this too much is removed and so the liver that stores reserves of glucose will release more into the blood stream in order for us to function correctly, but when this happens our body believes that the depleted glucose occurred because we must be in dangerous situation and running for our lives, which is why the depletion of glucose occurred, when in fact it was because we consumed too much sugar in the first place that then had to be removed by the pancreas releasing the insulin, and so the message is sent to the hypothalamus with sets up the fight or flight reaction which results in releasing the stress hormones, So now we can see how the stress hormones enter the body if we are on a high sugar diet and why it is important to limit our sugar intake, especially if life has been particularly challenging in recent months.
